Volunteer Know Your Rights Coordinator
Position description
This position is based in the ACLU regional office in Columbus.
Distribute and publicize the ACLU’s “Know Your Rights” materials to various communities including central and southern Ohio’s African-American and Latino communities; immigrant and refugee communities (including Somalis); ex-felons; high school and college students.
Present “Know Your Rights” information to community groups.
Specific skills needed
- The ideal volunteer will be an attorney with time to spare and a passion for educating diverse audiences about their rights.
- A commitment to civil liberties, equality and fairness is essential.
- Knowledge of the criminal justice system and basic legal terms and concepts.
Requirements for all volunteer positions
- ACLU membership, commitment to civil liberties issues and equality.
- Proficiency with computers, including Microsoft Office, Internet and email. Home Internet access required.
- Attention to detail and ability to work independently.
Time frame
- Flexible, dependent mostly on scheduling of presentations.
- An initial commitment of 6 months.
- Estimated 8-12 hours/month.
