CLEVELAND—Ohio’s most prominent advocates for civil liberties and disability rights are hosting an event highlighting the importance of mental health in current efforts for police reform in Cleveland.

On Thursday, October 1, the ACLU of Ohio and Disability Rights Ohio are bringing experts in mental health, civil liberties, and police practices to participate in a panel discussion on the Department of Justice consent decree with the city of Cleveland. Panelists will explore how incidents, such as the death of Tanisha Anderson, illustrate the need for appropriate police responses to people with mental illness, and outline strategies to promote safety and constitutional practices. They will focus on the importance of mental health awareness for successful implementation of the reforms outlined in the consent decree.

The event will be held at the Max Wohl Civil Liberties Center at 4506 Chester Ave., Cleveland, Ohio 44103. Panel begins at 7 p.m., followed by a Q&A session with the audience. The event is free and open to the public.

Participants are encouraged to RSVP at www.acluohio.org, email contact@acluohio.org, or call 216-472-2200 for more information.
