In our efforts to protect children, can we ever go too far?
Join us for the book launch of Framing Innocence, by Lynn Powell, the story of a determined prosecutor, a fundamentalist Christian anti-porn crusader, a family under siege, and the community that rallies around them. Following the reading, Nora Stewart, the child at the center of the case, will make her first public remarks about the prosecution of her mother, amateur photographer Cynthia Stewart.
Ten years ago, Cynthia dropped off film to be developed at a drugstore near her home in Ohio. The rolls contained photographs of her eight year old daughter Nora, including two of the child in the shower – photos that would cause the county prosecutor to arrest Cynthia, threaten to remove her daughter from her home, and charge her with child pornography.
Copies of Framing Innocence will be available for purchase and signing.
Free and open to the public. To RSVP for this event, please call (216) 472-2200 or email contact@acluohio.org.
This event is sponsored by the ACLU of Ohio North Central Chapter, Oberlin College Creative Writing Program, Friends of the Oberlin College Library, and Mindfair Books.
The ACLU of Ohio provides speakers to over one hundred community groups, schools, and universities annually. Our speakers are members of the ACLU staff and board of directors, faculty at local colleges and universities, and other civil liberties experts and activists.
Whether you’re looking for a history of the Bill of Rights or a contemporary take on free speech, an ACLU expert can help inform and engage your audience. At Constitution Day events in the past, we’ve presented on a variety of topics, including:
Students! Know Your Rights
Cyber Invaders: Technology, Privacy, and the Constitution
National Security and Civil Liberties in the Age of Obama
We’ll work with you to select a date, time, and topic that suit your organization, and we can work to provide you a speaker on any budget.
