Call Senator Voinovich about Real ID amendments

03.11.08 This week our Senator Voinovich will have two opportunities to say no to expanding Real ID, an unfunded mandate that jeopardizes privacy without improving public safety.

Call Senator Voinovich today (phone: 202-224-3353) and urge him to PASS the Tester Amendments.

Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) is offering two amendments that prevent Real ID from being expanded:

  • The “Deadline Delay Amendment” to S. 2606 would prevent the Department of Homeland Security from punishing residents of states that refuse to comply with Real ID. DHS has threatened to put residents of non-compliant states through additional airport screening beginning on May 11, 2008, even though other states do not have to comply with Real ID until 2014.
  • The “Funding Amendment” to S. Con. Res. 70 (a non-binding resolution) suggests that $50 million allocated for Real ID – which does not go into effect until 2014 – be reallocated for veterans benefits.

Votes on both Tester Amendments are expected this week.

Please contact Senator Voinovich today and urge him to support the Tester Amendments.
