Updated 10.05.07 The laws surrounding
teens and health care can be vague and confusing. Depending on the
situation, teens have the right to make some health decisions on their
own. And confidentiality and consent laws vary widely depending on the
age of the teen and the treatment needed. What’s Happening in Ohio As a result of a court decision in the case Cincinnati Women's Services v. Taft , the law governing teens 17 and younger seeking abortions has changed. Young women 17 and under are now required to obtain the consent of a
parent, custodian or guardian in order get an abortion. If a parent will
not consent to an abortion, the minor can seek a judicial bypass. The
ACLU's teen health guide has been updated to reflect this change.
