Development Coordinator

Summary
The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the Bill of Rights through litigation and public education. The organization is funded solely through individual contributions and occasional foundation grants.

Over the years staff members have found the ACLU to be an accommodating, inspiring and fun place to work. Although the environment is informal — staff members wear jeans to work a good deal of the time — we are an activist, hard-working team involved in the life of the community.

Responsibilities
As a key staff member reporting to the Development Director and Executive Director, the Development Coordinator is a junior team member with the room and capacity for advancement in the ACLU of Ohio’s development program. The position has responsibility for coordinating written communications with donors and prospects – with an emphasis on moving these donors and prospects into higher levels of giving over time. The position reports to the Director of Development.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Coordination of direct and electronic mailings, including targeted messages to major donors, event follow-ups, and scheduled solicitation mailings throughout the calendar year. This includes planning, scheduling, analysis and evaluation of individual mailings and of the mailing program overall.
  • Writing, including direct mail solicitations and e-mail updates, website content and print communications, and donor cultivation pieces.
  • Management of communication with donors via social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter, and other similar community sites.
  • Work as a “utility player” with Education and Public Policy Departments to organize education programming and coordinate volunteers. Education program responsibilities include but are not limited to participation in the ACLU of Ohio Speakers Bureau and organizing all facets of programs at the ACLU and around the state aimed at educating donors and members on key civil liberties issues.
  • Participation in development program evaluation and planning.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Development Director and Executive Director.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated personal commitment to and enthusiasm for civil rights and civil liberties, and to high ethical standards.
  • At least three years of demonstrated success with non-profit, advocacy, or other community-based groups, preferably in development-related activities.
  • At least a Bachelor’s degree.
  • High degree of self-motivation and organization, including attention to detail, ability to work independently on assignments and projects, ability to work well under pressure, prioritize work, seek appropriate guidance, and meet deadlines.
  • Superior written communication skills.
  • Excellent office and computer skills, including database management, Word, Excel, Outlook, and internet research. Knowledge of fundraising software (Raiser’s Edge and/or PIDI Donor Direct) preferred.

  • Ability and willingness to work occasional overtime, irregular hours (including some weekends), and travel.

Compensation and Benefits
