Field Organizer
ACLU of Ohio Foundation
Position based in Columbus, Ohio
Summary
The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the Bill of Rights through litigation and public education. The organization is funded solely through individual contributions and occasional foundation grants.
Over the years staff members have found the ACLU to be an accommodating,
inspiring and fun place to work. Although the environment is informal --
staff members wear jeans to work a good deal of the time -- we are an
activist, hard-working team involved in the life of the community.
Responsibilities
The field organizer supports and strengthens our network of
working groups, chapters and activists and is responsible for
implementing educational programs and mobilizing volunteers to spearhead
public education campaigns. The position is based Columbus, Ohio, but
requires travel across the southern half of the state, and, less
frequently, to northeast Ohio.
- Design and implement grassroots strategies to mobilize members
and supporters to take meaningful action on ACLU’s local, state, and
national agenda, coordinating such strategies with other ACLU
education staff.
- Train, empower, and organize ACLU volunteers.
- Organize large-scale public education and membership recruitment
events, such as community forums, public hearings, panel
discussions, and movie screenings.
- Develop written materials, including letters, fliers, newsletter
articles, press releases, and email alerts.
- Represent the ACLU in various coalitions and before community
groups in central and southern Ohio.
- Develop and implement a broad range of outreach strategies to
involve/recruit youth and advance campus clubs.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by the
Executive or Associate Directors.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent combination of education and
experience.
- A commitment to civil liberties, equality and fairness is
essential
- Demonstrated leadership skills and strong interpersonal skills;
experience in online organizing and communication a plus.
- Prior experience with community organizing, coalition building,
event planning or issues campaigns.
- Excellent oral, written and verbal communication skills
- Superb organization skills; detail oriented with strong
follow-through and the ability to manage several projects
simultaneously.
- Creative, results-oriented, self-starting, assertive, outgoing,
and willing to learn.
In addition, the selected candidate:
- Must have a clean driving record (driving background check
conducted)
- Must have reliable transportation
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule (negotiated), which
includes some evening and weekend hours and statewide travel
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds without health risk
- Must have a neat appearance
- Must have proficiency with computers, including Microsoft
Office, Internet and email
Work Hours
25-35 hours per week. Able to manage an aggressive schedule,
working beyond 9-5 as needed. Weekend and evening work from time to
time, with occasional overnight statewide travel.
Compensation and Benefits
$15-$20 per hour. Prorated benefits, including health insurance,
personal care reimbursement, retirement plan, life insurance, and paid
