Recent activity
In September 2007 the Miami Valley Working Group collaborated with
the Coretta Scott King Center to bring noted historian Paul Cook to
Yellow Springs. During “Youth Leadership in the 1960’s Civil Rights
Struggle” Cook described the pivotal role youth played in changing their
communities forever and inspired area youth to get involved in changing
their future.
More recently, the group began exploring the troubles and triumphs of
the Dayton area’s immigrant population. Their first event on the
subject, “Coming to America: Challenges Facing Immigrants in the U.S.,”
took place on November 8, 2007 at the Dayton International Peace Museum.
Theo Majka, professor of sociology at the University of Dayton, and Mark
Ensalaco, professor of political science and head of the Human Rights
Program at the University of Dayton spoke about the culture of fear in
which many undocumented immigrants live. (Fear of reporting crimes,
utilizing institutions such as banks and hospitals, enrolling their
children in schools, and being separated from documented family members
by deportation.)
