Marriage Equality Goes to the Supreme Court

On March 27,2013, ACLU attorneys will appear before the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) to argue Windsor v. United States, a landmark case that will determine the constitutionality of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act.

The ACLU has been working toward this moment for many years. Click here for more information about this historic case and its courageous plaintiff, Edie Windsor.

On March 26, SCOTUS will also hear arguments in Hollingsworth v. Perry, a case that will decide the constitutionality of California’s Proposition 8, an amendment to the state constitution which restricts marriage to opposite sex couples.

These two cases, which are expected to be decided in June 2013, represent a pivotal moment in the ongoing fight for LGBT equality in this nation.
