Stop the Higher Education Destruction Act

Take Action

The Ohio General Assembly is considering two bills, Senate Bill 83 and House Bill 151, extremely controversial and overly broad bills that would undermine free speech on college campuses.

The ACLU of Ohio firmly opposes this overly vague legislation for several reasons. The Higher Education Destruction Act would:

  1. Eliminate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Trainings. One provision claims “An individual, by virtue of his or her race or sex, is inherently racist, sexist, or oppressive, whether consciously or unconsciously.” This language is very concerning.
  2. Ban “Controversial Beliefs or Policies”. SB 83 and HB 151 would force colleges and universities to ignore issues such as climate change, DEI programs, or abortion, to name a few. Because the language is so broad, virtually any topic in today’s society could be the subject of “political controversy,” and fall under the same ban.
  3. Demand universities and faculty provide for a maximum amount of “intellectual diversity” with language and requirements so vague it will surely impact academic freedom and cause certain subjects to be entirely avoided in classrooms.

TAKE ACTION: Contact the House Higher Education Committee and urge them to REJECT SB 83 and HB 151.
