Our Take on This Bill

Currently, children in Ohio can appear in juvenile courtrooms in restraints for any or no reason, despite the evidence that appearing in restraints can have multiple damaging effects on the child. HB 156 remedies this often unnecessary shackling and adds Ohio to the list of states that have limited restraints on children in courts to when they are necessary for safety or order in the court. This is a marked improvement over the current system and a step toward a better juvenile justice system for Ohio’s youth.
