Statement from the ACLU of Ohio on the recently introduced joint resolutions, designed to sway electoral outcomes by preventing people from voting.
"The Ohio Constitution exists to protect people’s liberties and freedoms, not to enable political gamesmanship. We the people should be able to exercise our sacred right to vote, free from aggressive government overreach and roadblocks. Senate Joint Resolution 10 and a companion House Resolution were introduced to sway electoral outcomes by preventing people from voting. The ACLU of Ohio strenuously opposes these resolutions and will use the full force of our organization to fight this coordinated attack on our freedom.
Over the last decade, we have seen how gerrymandering breeds extremism, and this legislative effort to weaponize our state constitution is the latest in a long list of examples where Republican lawmakers seek to elevate their own partisan interests over good policy - even over democracy - to control our elections and seize more power.
These resolutions are a transparent ploy to manipulate the democratic system and impact the governor’s race. The brazen coordination with the Ramaswamy Campaign, as shown by simultaneous introduction of the resolutions and perfectly aligned remarks in the media, is not at all subtle; it’s offensive and derivative."
