Racial Bias Panel Discussion - OTSE and ACLU of Ohio

Please join Ohioans to Stop Executions and the ACLU of Ohio for an in-person panel discussion on the role of racial bias in capital punishment. In 2020, the Columbia Human Rights Law Review published a study of 599 aggravated murder charges in Hamilton County. The researchers found that a case involving at least one white victim was 4.54 times more likely to be charged capitally. The Hamilton County Study also found that a black defendant who killed at least one white victim was 3.79 times more likely to face the death penalty than other similarly situated defendants and 5.33 times more likely than all other cases. This panel will discuss some of the reasons why this is the case. Confirmed to be on the panel is Tim Young, Public Defender at the Montgomery County Public Defender Office, and Elwood Jones, an exoneree who spent nearly 30 years on death row. Seating is limited to only about 30 in person participants - we will attempt to live stream the event as well. Visitor parking is available at the office. We look forward to your attendance and participation in this important conversation.

Election Protection Poll Monitor Training 2026

Thank you for your interest in Election Protection with the Ohio Voter Rights Coalition! Please register for one of the available trainings listed to become a nonpartisan Poll Monitor for the November General election. ***Please note - you only need to attend one of the trainings listed here, not all of them! Ohio's Election Protection program is part of the national 866ourvote.org program to promote the 866-OUR-VOTE hotline and ensure that all voters have an equal opportunity to vote and have that vote count. Trained poll monitors are a friendly face outside of polling locations to help voters if they have questions and report any issues. Even if you have served as a poll monitor in past years, we do ask that you sign up and retake it again so you can be refreshed with the information and updated on new information relevant this year. If you are unable to attend, please register and keep an eye out for a follow up email that will come with a recording of the training and notes. Please reach out if you have any questions! Thank you again for helping out with Election Protection and poll monitoring with the Ohio Voter Rights Coalition. Trainings available Thu, Oct 8, 6:00pm–7:00pm EDT Tue, Oct 13, 12:00pm–1:00pm EDT Thu, Oct 22, 6:00pm–7:00pm EDT Tue, Oct 27, 12:00pm–1:00pm EDT

Gender Roll

Trans "T" Talks and the ACLU of Ohio Present Gender Roll This year has seen our community pushed to its breaking point. So many of us are activating and doing what we can to fight back against the hate. In many ways, we are walking in the footsteps our our elders who marched for our rights in the 60's, 70's and beyond. During the 80's, amid hate crimes, discrimination, and the omnipresent threat of AIDS, we would run to our safe spaces to recharge and revel with our chosen family. Fight all day, dance all night. It helped us remember what we were fighting for, but it also allowed us moments of joy. It's what kept us going day after day. One way we have done this is on wheels! Roller skating has been a vibrant, cultural phenomenon since the 1930s, and since the colorful roller discos of the 1970s, roller skating has been a historically safe space for the LGBTQAI+ community to express ourselves freely. This tradition has continued to this day, with pride parades featuring skating events and queer friendly roller groups popping up all over the world. Skating provides a safe space for expression, community building, and activism, making it a lasting symbol of resilience and celebration within our community. So, to continue this tradition, Trans “T” Talks, in collaboration with ACLU Ohio, proudly present “Gender Roll!!” Join us on Saturday, October 18 from 11pm to 1am for a private, secured, after-hours Halloween themed skate party in Columbus (location will be sent to you upon registration). Come get your roll on and enjoy a night of revelry, community and FREE SKATING! As always, Trans “T” Talks will provide resources from our community organizations and allies. * Snack bar and midway open at regular prices. First 100 admitted free on a first come, first served basis, thereafter, regular ticket prices apply. *
