This bill makes it an illegal practice for employers to ask or require a potential or current employee to give them access to social media websites, email, or other electronic accounts. Employers would still be permitted to view any information available on social media accounts that is not password protected.

Our Take on This Bill

The ACLU of Ohio supports legislation to preserve the privacy of Ohioans, including the protections found in SB 45. The ACLU of Ohio is seeking to make this bill even stronger by adding schools, universities, and similar entities to those forbidden to demand passwords and usernames for electronic accounts.
