Today, the ACLU of Ohio celebrates the advancement of two bills that will promote successful reentry for our Ohio friends, neighbors, and family members returning home to their communities after incarceration. On a productive afternoon on Capitol Square, the Ohio House passed HB 296 by a vote of 81-5; this legislation proposes a grace period for court-imposed fines and fees in the period immediately following a person’s release from prison or transitional control. The bill will now head to the Ohio Senate for consideration.
Additionally, on Tuesday, the Senate Addiction and Community Revitalization Committee heard testimony on HB 393, which extends an important program providing state IDs to people leaving incarceration. We urge the Ohio General Assembly to continue supporting these bills and all policies that foster helpful transitions for Ohioans returning to society, set people up for success, and reduce recidivism.
