City Club of Cleveland: A Conversation with Deborah N. Archer, President of the National ACLU

Few organizations serve as fiercer defenders of constitutional rights and the rule of law than the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). At a time when free speech, free assembly, immigration, and voting rights are being tested across multiple fronts, Americans have come to count on the ACLU for its unyielding dedication to principle — even if they don't agree on every issue. Deborah N. Archer is President of the national ACLU, where she serves as Chair of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee. She brings frontline insight into today's web of legal battles, and calls attention to how traditional tools for protecting civil rights are currently being weakened and tested. Deborah is a tenured professor and associate dean at New York University School of Law, and the faculty director of the Community Equity Lab at NYU Law. To mark Law Day 2026, Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association's Chris Schmitt will sit in conversation with Deborah N. Archer, President of the ACLU, on the urgency of protecting the rule of law and defending the rights of all people nationwide. Use code ACLU26 for a discount when purchasing tickets.

Trans Block Party Columbus

Join the ACLU of Ohio and community partners on Saturday, May 2 from 12-2pm in Columbus for our fourth annual Trans Block Party! We’ll once again be celebrating and uplifting transgender, gender non-conforming, and intersex Ohioans with an afternoon of community resources, food & refreshments, a live DJ, and a fully stocked PRIDE swag-making station. We will have supplies to create all the signs, fans and buttons you will need for PRIDE this year! Now more than ever, it is important to come together and create a welcoming space for community members and allies. This will be an afternoon meant for celebration and the freedom to be exactly who we are. Together, we’ll continue to continue to fight for queer and trans folks' rights in the face of efforts to strip them away. Remember: joy is an act of resistance. Bring your friends, pack your sunnies and sunscreen, and get ready to have a blast! We welcome community members and allies of all ages to attend this fun-filled summer event.

Emergency Meeting: Unite for Springfield - ICE Out of Our Communities

On Tuesday, Feb. 3. at 11:59 pm, 15,000 Haitian immigrants are set to lose their "Temporary Protected Status" in Springfield, Ohio (population 60,000). Local residents are preparing for a 30-day ICE surge - even though conditions in Haiti are more dangerous than ever, thousands of children could be separated from their parents, and the Haitian community has helped fuel the small town's economic comeback. We stood up for Springfield, Ohio, when JD Vance and Donald Trump lied about Haitians who live and work there during the 2024 campaign, and we're doing it again now. Join us to hear from local residents and legal experts, help raise funds for local groups providing direct support to Haitian families in Springfield, and take action, no matter where you live.

Gender Roll

Trans "T" Talks and the ACLU of Ohio Present Gender Roll This year has seen our community pushed to its breaking point. So many of us are activating and doing what we can to fight back against the hate. In many ways, we are walking in the footsteps our our elders who marched for our rights in the 60's, 70's and beyond. During the 80's, amid hate crimes, discrimination, and the omnipresent threat of AIDS, we would run to our safe spaces to recharge and revel with our chosen family. Fight all day, dance all night. It helped us remember what we were fighting for, but it also allowed us moments of joy. It's what kept us going day after day. One way we have done this is on wheels! Roller skating has been a vibrant, cultural phenomenon since the 1930s, and since the colorful roller discos of the 1970s, roller skating has been a historically safe space for the LGBTQAI+ community to express ourselves freely. This tradition has continued to this day, with pride parades featuring skating events and queer friendly roller groups popping up all over the world. Skating provides a safe space for expression, community building, and activism, making it a lasting symbol of resilience and celebration within our community. So, to continue this tradition, Trans “T” Talks, in collaboration with ACLU Ohio, proudly present “Gender Roll!!” Join us on Saturday, October 18 from 11pm to 1am for a private, secured, after-hours Halloween themed skate party in Columbus (location will be sent to you upon registration). Come get your roll on and enjoy a night of revelry, community and FREE SKATING! As always, Trans “T” Talks will provide resources from our community organizations and allies. * Snack bar and midway open at regular prices. First 100 admitted free on a first come, first served basis, thereafter, regular ticket prices apply. *
