The ACLU of Ohio submits HB 206 grants far too much authority to a single individual, and we are concerned these powers will be abused and unevenly applied. We encourage lawmakers to reject Substitute House Bill 206.

The ACLU of Ohio encourages the committee’s rejection of Senate Bill 293 in favor of current law which allows local school districts to decide themselves whether or not to accommodate religious release time programs.

As students return to campus across Ohio this month, I am continuously reminded of how much excitement and anticipation this time of year brings. Students beginning their new schedules and discovering what they want to participate in makes me feel hopeful for the future of the state.

To Chairman Edwards, Vice Chair LaRe, Ranking Member Sweeney, and members of the House Finance Committee, thank you for this opportunity to provide interested party testimony on House Bill 606.

With every passing year, Ohio falls further behind with regard to statewide laws protecting student privacy. SB 29 not only adequately updates our laws, its passage will make Ohio a leader for the rest of the country.

The ACLU of Ohio’s primary concern with HB 8 is the negative impact and consequences its passage will surely have for many students lives, their physical and mental health, and school staff.

The bottom line is that students have a First Amendment right to have access to materials in their schools’ libraries free of viewpoint discrimination.

Our children are in the midst of a student mental health crisis. As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to an end, let’s look ahead to a future where all students thrive.
