The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on the education system. Now, lawmakers are trying restrict students’ rights and their learning.

As many Ohioans prepare to celebrate Passover and Easter, it is a fitting time to reflect on a continued injustice that folks from across the faith spectrum are mobilizing in growing numbers to repeal – Ohio’s death penalty.

The death penalty is nothing more than the modern version of the most shameful, vengeful, mob violence this country ever produced—a racist policy that cannot be fixed and must be abolished for Ohio to have any hope for justice.

Under HB 322, should a teacher or school district wish to inform her students of this history, she is forbidden to teach it or refer to is as deliberate, systemic racism.

HB 327 makes illegal the State Board of Education, school districts, schools, staff, and teachers instructing students that such things as slavery in the United States, or the Jewish Holocaust.

In Ohio’s distant history, our laws prohibited Black people from voting. Or holding office. Or serving on juries. Or even testifying in court against white people.
