The ACLU of Ohio issued a statement today in response to the decision of the United States Supreme Court in United States v. Skrmetti.

Today, the Supreme Court of Ohio granted the state’s emergency request to stay a ruling from the Tenth District Court of Appeals that would have blocked the state from enforcing House Bill 68, a law banning gender affirming medical care for transgender youth. 

Today, in an historic win for bodily autonomy and LGBTQ+ Ohioans, a three judge panel on the Tenth District Court of Appeals overturned House Bill 68, Ohio’s law banning gender-affirming medical care for trans youth, and prohibiting trans women and girls from participating in sports.

Today, the Ohio Senate passed Senate Bill 104, an anti-trans bathroom bill requiring individuals in primary and secondary schools as well as institutions of higher education to use restrooms and other facilities that align with their sex assigned at birth.

Today the ACLU of Ohio filed a brief on behalf of the National Association of Social Workers, including its Ohio Chapter (NASW), as amicus curiae to the Ohio Supreme Court in the case In re LES.

Late Thursday, the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Ohio, and the global law firm Goodwin filed a motion in the 10th District Court of Appeals, asking for an injunction to halt the enforcement of  House Bill 68 pending appeal.

Today, the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas rejected our challenge to House Bill 68, Ohio’s law banning gender-affirming medical care for trans youth, and prohibiting trans women and girls from participating in sports.

On July 15, the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas will begin a five-day trial in a challenge brought by two Ohio families and their transgender daughters against Ohio’s ban on gender-affirming medical care charging the law with violating the Ohio state constitution.
